Netflix Invests $587 Million to Advance the Future of AI-Powered Filmmaking

Netflix has taken a new step toward developing artificial intelligence tools for the film industry by acquiring InterPositive, an AI filmmaking technology company founded by American actor and director Ben Affleck. The technology aims to improve post-production workflows, enhance image editing, and reduce the costs of producing films and television series.

The entertainment industry is entering a new phase of digital transformation, where artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly important role not only in content creation but also in complex filmmaking processes such as editing, visual effects, and image enhancement. In this context, Netflix has acquired InterPositive for approximately $587 million, highlighting the growing importance of intelligent technologies in the future of cinema.

InterPositive develops AI-powered tools that help filmmakers address common production challenges, including creating missing shots, modifying backgrounds, improving lighting, and enhancing footage after filming. These technologies are not designed to replace human creativity; rather, they aim to simplify time-consuming technical processes and make production workflows more efficient.

According to Netflix, the entire InterPositive team will join the company following the acquisition, while Ben Affleck will continue working with Netflix as a senior advisor. The company had previously begun exploring the use of generative AI tools in parts of its production processes.

Netflix’s investment is part of a broader competition among major entertainment companies to adopt artificial intelligence in film, television, and digital content production. Companies hope these technologies can reduce production timelines, manage visual effects costs, and enable the creation of more complex and ambitious projects.

However, the growing use of artificial intelligence in cinema continues to raise challenges related to intellectual property rights, the role of human creators, and protecting the position of artists in the industry. The future of entertainment will likely be shaped by a combination of human creativity and intelligent technologies.
